چکیده

Abstract Concentrations of fluorine and chlorine were measured in glasses (quenched melts) coexisting clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, olivine, plagioclase run products experiments previously used to measure sulfur partitioning between these phases. The F clinopyroxene silicate melt was determined 13 at a variety pressures, temperatures, compositions ranging from basaltic dacitic (49 66 wt% SiO2) 0.8 1.2 GPa 1000 1240 °C, hydrous anhydrous conditions. Additionally, we the crystal-melt for 4 with plagioclase, 2 1 olivine. Although Cl also experiments, concentrations crystals are close background concentration levels. partition coefficients varied ~0.09 0.29 linearly dependent upon aluminum octahedral M1 site clinopyroxene. Similar relationships seen when our results combined previous measurements coefficient melt, but each study shows its own unique correlation AlM1. These dissimilarities correlations AlM1 attributed differing analytical protocols various studies. However, data set demonstrates linear AlM1, inverse NBO/T ratio (T/NBO), pressure temperature, which can be described as: l n ⁡ ( D C p x / L ) = 0.2298 ± 0.04847 T N B O - 1.029 0.8045 A M 3889 1803 0.5472 0.1084 P + 0.5871 1.304 , where uncertainty is standard error fit (as calculated by R-project software), K, GPa. this relationship reproduces 81% within 25% (relative), different trends coefficient, DFCpx/L vs. laboratories suggest need additional investigations development standards certified compositions. Nevertheless, conclude that self-consistency indicates using one protocol applied minerals or analyzed same ion microprobe better understand storage transport magmatic systems.

Effect of water on the fluorine and chlorine partitioning behavior between olivine and silicate melt

Halogens show a range from moderate (F) to highly (Cl, Br, I) volatile and incompatible behavior, which makes them excellent tracers for volatile transport processes in the Earth's mantle. Experimentally determined fluorine and chlorine partitioning data between mantle minerals and silicate melt enable us to estimate Mid Ocean Ridge Basalt (MORB) and Ocean Island Basalt (OIB) source region conc...

Trace element partitioning between wollastonite and silicate-carbonate melt

We have performed an experimental study of the influence of varying size and charge on cation partitioning between wollastonite and silicate-carbonate melt in the system CaCO3-SiO2. The experimental conditions (3 GPa, 14208C) lie close to the wollastonite II tc/I tc phase boundary. Results for 1+, 2+, 3+ and 4+ partitioning show parabolic dependence of partition coefficients on ionic radius, wh...

Experimental Divalent Element Partitioning between Anorthite and Cai Melt

Introduction: A quantitative description of crystal-liquid trace element partitioning is critical to understanding the igneous differentiation history of the terrestrial planets. Anorthitic plagioclase is the type mineral of terrestrial planet crusts, and for the Moon, specifically, quantitative understanding of trace element partitioning in anorthite is key to testing models of the lunar magma...

Chemical diffusion of fluorine in jadeite melt at high pressure

The chemical diffusion of fluorine in jadeite melt has been investigated from 10 to 15 kbars and 1200 to 14OO“C using diffusion couples of jadeite melt and fluorine-bearing jadeite melt (6.3 wt.% F). The diffusion profile data indicate that the diffusion process is concentration-independent, binarv. F-O interdiffision. The F-O interdiffusion coefficient ranges from 1.3 X IO-’ to 7.1 X lo-’ cm*/...

Apatite-Melt Volatile Partitioning Under Lunar Conditions

Introduction: The volatile component of apatite [Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH)] makes it a popular choice for studying the abundance and distribution of indigenous lunar volatiles [e.g. 1-5]. The thermodynamic behavior of volatile partitioning into apatite is, however, poorly constrained. Limited experimental studies of apatite/melt partitioning have focused on terrestrial systems [6], chlorine-brine syst...
